AFCON 2023: Angola Beats Mauritania In Five Goals Thriller

Angola defeated Mauritania on Saturday in a five-goal thriller AFCON match in Cote d’Ivoire.

Thanks to Gelson Dalo, who scored two goals, and Gilberto, who made the scoreline three to earn victory for Angola as Mauritania struggled to equal scores.

Sportxparte reports that the Group D clash between Mauritania and Angola in the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament concluded 3-2 in favour of Angola.

Angola took the early lead in the 30th minute and continued to push for a spot in the round of 16.

However, Mauritania fought back 13 minutes later with a goal from Sidi Amar, equalizing the score. The second half of the match saw both teams creating more chances, resulting in an open and intense encounter.

In the 50th minute, Jacinto Muondo (Gelson) restored Angola’s lead, followed by Gilberto doubling their advantage just three minutes later. However, in the 58th minute, Aboubakary Koita scored for Mauritania, intensifying the game for both sets of fans.

Ultimately, the match, which took place at the Stade Bouaké, ended in a 3-2 defeat for Mauritania, allowing Angola to maintain their position at the top of Group D with four points from two games.

They are tied with second-placed Burkina Faso and hold a two-point lead over third-placed Algeria. Angola’s next group stage game is against Burkina Faso on January 23 at 9 p.m., where the winner will secure the top spot in the group and a favourable position in the next round.
