AFCON 2023: Cape Verde Beats Mozambique 3-0, Qualify For Next Round
Cape Verde has moved to the next round of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) after defeating Mozambique on Friday.
Cape Verde secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Mozambique in the ongoing 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, all thanks to a remarkable long-range free-kick by former Manchester United player Bebe.
Bebe’s strike from 40 meters found the back of the net just after the half-hour mark, giving Cape Verde the lead.
Captain Ryan Mendes extended their advantage shortly after halftime, and Kevin Pina sealed the win with an impressive goal in the second half.
This triumph, the largest in Cape Verde’s AFCON history, ensures their progression to the last 16 and places them at the top of Group B with six points. In their previous game, they defeated Ghana 2-1.
Their upcoming match against Egypt, who currently have two points, will determine the final standings in the group. Despite their loss, Mozambique still has a chance to qualify as they face Ghana next, with both teams tied on one point each.
Bebe’s exceptional performance included hitting the crossbar with a free-kick before scoring his first goal in the 32nd minute. His powerful shot proved too much for Mozambique goalkeeper Ernan.
Mozambique believed they were awarded a penalty right before the end of the first half when Geny Catamo fell in the penalty area while tangled with Joao Paulo Fernandes. However, the decision was overturned by the Moroccan referee after a VAR review.
In the 51st minute, Mendes, who plays for Turkish club Fatih Karagumruk, extended the lead to 2-0 by dispossessing Mozambique defender Edmilson Dove just outside the box and successfully shooting past the goalkeeper.
Despite Catamo hitting the crossbar with a free-kick, Cape Verde managed to score again in the 69th minute. Midfielder Pina delivered an exceptional strike from nearly 30 meters, finding the top corner of the net.
With their position at the top of the group guaranteed, the Blue Sharks are already aware that they will face a third-placed team in the last-16 tie on January 29, which will take place in Abidjan.
