The goalkeeper for the South African national team, Rowen Williams, has stated that his counterpart for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Stanley Nwabali, drew inspiration from him prior to the 2023 AFCON.

SportXparte understands that both Nwabali and Williams play in the South African Premier League, with Nwabali representing Chippa United and Williams playing for Mamelodi Sundowns.

It is worth noting that these goalkeepers are considered to be among the top performers in both the league and the ongoing 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

Before joining the Super Eagles for the tournament, Nwabali, who is 27 years old, held the position of the third goalkeeper with the highest number of clean sheets in the league. In the 2023 AFCON, he has already achieved four clean sheets in five games, showcasing his exceptional skills.

On the other hand, Williams, who is 32 years old, made history in the AFCON by saving four penalty kicks during South Africa’s victory over Cape Verde in a penalty shootout. This remarkable feat has solidified his reputation as a talented goalkeeper.

However, today at 6 p.m., both Williams and Nwabali will meet in the 2023 AFCON semi-final clash between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.

When asked during an interview earlier about Nwabali’s performance in the 2023 AFCON ahead of the semi-final clash, Williams said, “I’m happy for him; I had a chat with him when we played each other in Port Elizabeth, and it’s so weird that he told me that I inspire him.

“The way he’s playing now, I’m so happy that I can inspire someone, a fellow professional – so tomorrow we’ll share the stage and go out to continue doing what we’ve been doing, trying to be the best goalkeepers we can be.”
