Aston Villa managed to maintain their impeccable home record in the UEFA Europa Conference League with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Lille in the first leg of their quarter-final clash at Villa Park.

The game started with a bang as Ollie Watkins opened the scoring for Villa inside 15 minutes, heading in a precise corner from John McGinn. The early goal set the tone for the match and put Lille on the back foot from the outset.

Lille showed resilience and created several chances to get back into the game. Edon Zhegrova came close to scoring midway through the first half, only to be denied by a solid save from Villa’s goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez. The French side continued to push forward, with Martinez making crucial saves against Bafode Diakite and Jonathan David to keep Villa in the lead.

As the second half unfolded, Villa remained composed and extended their lead through another goal from McGinn, who expertly curled a low shot into the net. Lille fought back valiantly, with Gabriel Gudmundsson scoring a disallowed goal due to an offside call.

Despite the setback, Lille kept pressing and finally found the back of the net through Diakité’s header from a corner in the 84th minute.

The late goal gave Lille a glimmer of hope, but Villa held on to secure a vital victory in the first leg of the quarter-final.
