Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal Breaks Champions League Record As Youngest Starter
Lamine Yamal, playing for Xavi, broke Celestine Babayaro’s record for being the youngest player to ever start in the Champions League.
The Spanish wonder broke Babayaro’s record of 16 years and 86 days, set with Anderlecht in November 1994, at the age of barely 16 years and 83 days. When Yamal made his Champions League debut against Royal Antwerp at the Estadi Olmpic Llus Companys at the tender age of 16 years and 68 days, he did so as the second-youngest player overall and as Barcelona’s youngest-ever debutant ever.
In addition to setting club records, this outstanding adolescent made history by making Spain’s youngest-ever debut during a Euro 2024 qualifier against Georgia. In an amazing turn of events, he not only entered the pitch but also scored, making him the youngest goal scorer in Spain’s history of international play.
