Germany defender, Mats Hummels, is set to join Roma as a free agent after leaving Borussia Dortmund earlier this summer.

The 35-year-old is set to arrive in Rome on Wednesday, September 4, to undergo a medical examination and finalize his contract with the Italian club.

The Athletic reported Real Sociedad was in advanced talks to sign the center-back earlier this summer, but he is now set for a move to Serie A instead.

Roma had a busy summer transfer window, bringing in Artem Dovybk, Matias Soule, Enzo Le Fee, Angelino, and Mathew Ryan. With the addition of Hummels, he would become the second free agent to join the club this week, following former Atletico Madrid defender, Mario Hermoso.

Hummels has spent his entire club career in Germany so far, winning five Bundesliga titles during two separate spells at Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

The German made 508 appearances for Dortmund in all competitions across two separate spells having made his Bundesliga debut for Bayern.

Hummels spent the 2008-09 season on loan at Dortmund from Bayern before a permanent transfer. He then became a key player for Jurgen Klopp’s squad, helping the team clinch consecutive German league titles in 2011 and 2012.

Hummels returned to Bayern in 2016 and went on the three consecutive league titles. He has 70 caps for his country and was part of the German team that won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
