Borussia Dortmund Loans Defender Ian Maatsen From Chelsea Until The End Of The Season
Borussia Dortmund confirmed on Friday that they have signed defender Ian Maatsen on a season-long loan from Chelsea.
The August-born Netherlands youth international debuted in the Premier League last year and has made 12 appearances so far this season.
Dortmund sports director Sebastian Kehl said in a statement.“Because of our current squad situation, we decided to act on the left-back position this winter.” “Ian fits our profile with his strengths.”
“He has a lot of pace, a strong left foot, and can play various positions.”
After Jordan Sancho returned to the team on loan from Manchester United on Thursday, Maatsen, 21, is Dortmund’s second acquisition of the January transfer window.
Edin Terzić, the head coach of Dortmund, stated to the media on Friday that he is not ruling out the idea of Sancho making his second debut for the team on Saturday when they play Darmstadt.
Terzić said, “We are happy that Jadon is finally with us. He had a lot of fun on the training pitch. He is healthy, and he has trained a lot in the last few weeks. We will use the session again today and see how far he is.”
Dortmund, the runners-up in the Bundesliga the previous season, have struggled in the league and are currently in fifth position, 15 points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen and 6 behind RB Leipzig, who are in fourth place and have the final Champions League slot.
Nevertheless, they have progressed to the Champions League knockout stage, where they will play Maatsen’s youth team, PSV Eindhoven, in the round of 16 next month.
Friday marks the start of the Bundesliga’s three-week winter vacation.
