Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez is set to sit out the remainder of the season following surgery for a groin injury conducted on Thursday.

Having battled with a hernia issue for weeks, the 23-year-old Argentine playmaker faced challenges in making a significant contribution during Chelsea’s recent 5-0 defeat against Arsenal.

As a result of the surgery, Fernandez will miss Chelsea’s final six league fixtures. There is uncertainty regarding his availability for the Copa America in June, with his recovery timeline yet to be determined.

In a challenging season for Chelsea, Enzo Fernandez, a 2022 World Cup champion, has become the newest player to suffer an injury setback at the Premier League club.

Throughout the season, Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has faced the absence of up to 12 players at times, leading to the team’s current ninth-place position due to a combination of fitness and performance concerns.

Following their recent 5-0 defeat against Arsenal, which came after a 1-0 loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, pressure is mounting on Pochettino as he navigates the team through a turbulent period.

Having been acquired from Benfica for a hefty sum of £107 million in January 2023, Fernandez has featured in 28 league matches this season finding the back of the net on three occasions.
