Controversy Surrounds VAR Decision In Arsenal-Liverpool Draw

David Coote, the VAR official overseeing the match, faced severe criticism, notably from Liverpool’s manager, Jurgen Klopp.
Klopp expressed his frustration post-game, highlighting an incident where Martin Odegaard’s handball during the first half went unnoticed by the VAR team. According to Klopp, the handling of the ball by Odegaard in the 18-yard box should have led to a penalty for Liverpool. He emphasized the need for more accurate decisions from the VAR officials, stating that a “guy in an office” should have intervened to award the penalty.
Despite the contentious VAR situation, Arsenal’s fourth-minute opener by Gabriel was later canceled out by Mohamed Salah, resulting in a stalemate. The draw places Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table as they head into the Christmas period.
Klopp, however, reiterated his disappointment over the unawarded penalty, emphasizing a pivotal moment in the 19th minute when Odegaard seemed to impede Salah’s path to the ball with a handball. Referee Chris Kavanagh allowed play to continue, and VAR did not intervene for a check, with Coote deeming Odegaard’s contact with the ball as unintentional while falling.
“I’ve seen it,” Klopp stated.
“I’m certain someone will have an explanation for why it wasn’t considered a handball, but I can’t comprehend how.”
