Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) has qualified for the 2023 AFCON Round of 16 stage.

There are currently celebrations in Cote d’Ivoire after the hosts of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), narrowly secured their spot in the next round of the tournament after a two-day wait.

Similar to Ghana, Algeria, Tunisia, and other previous champions who have been eliminated from the 2023 AFCON, Ivory Coast had a disappointing performance during the group stage, Sportxparte reports.

Interestingly, unlike the other teams, Ivory Coast got another opportunity to further their participation in the tournament, all thanks to Morocco’s victory over Zambia on the night of January 24th.

It is worth noting that Ivory Coast finished third in Group A, achieving a 2-0 victory against Guinea-Bissau, suffering a 1-0 defeat against Nigeria, and surprisingly losing 4-0 to Equatorial Guinea.

Consequently, their sole chance of advancing in the tournament relied on being among the top four teams that lost. Following the conclusion of the Group E teams’ match on Wednesday at 6 p.m., only one spot remained.

Zambia, who secured the third position in Group F with 2 points from three games, were anticipated to defeat Morocco and secure the spot. However, they suffered a 1-0 loss against the talented Moroccan team. As a result, Ivory Coast, with three points, claimed the spot and progressed to the round of 16.
