Real Madrid defender, Dani Carvajal, confirmed he will undergo surgery after suffering a cruciate ligament injury in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Villarreal in La Liga.

Carvajal was carried off on a stretcher during stoppage time after a clash with Villarreal midfielder, Jeremy Pino resulted in an unnatural sprain to his right knee.

“Serious cruciate ligament injury confirmed, I’ll have to undergo surgery and be off the field for a few months,” Carvajal said on Instagram as he posted his picture in an ambulance.

“Looking forward to starting the recovery process and coming back like an animal. Thank you all for your messages, I feel very loved,” he added.

The Spaniard played a key role for his nation during their Euro 2024 triumph earlier this year and has been considered one of the favorites to win the 2024 Ballon d’Or award. His excellent run has come to an end now, though.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti expressed concern over Carvajal’s injury, marking yet another setback for the Spanish team, which has already been coping without goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois due to an abductor muscle injury sustained against Atletico last weekend.

“He’s had a cervical problem and is completely blocked. He’s in pain and will be tested in the next few hours,” Ancelotti told reporters during his post-match press conference.
