Everton Gets Two More Point Deduction For Breaching Premier League Financial Rules
Everton has received a two-point deduction, their second point cut this season after the club’s appeal against a Premier League charge for a breach of Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) was unsuccessful, the league said on Monday.
The penalty is Everton’s second of the campaign after they were hit with a 10-point deduction in November, which was reduced to six in February.
The Toffees have now dropped down one position to 16th in the Premier League & just two points above the relegation zone.
In November, Everton was initially given 10 points for exceeding the permitted losses by’ £19.5m over a period ending with the 2021/22 season. However, following an appeal, this penalty was reduced to six points. The club’s woes continued as they were charged again in January for breaching PSR rules over a period ending with the 2022/23 season. This time, Everton was deducted a further two points for failing to stick to the financial regulations.
The latest deduction of two points came after Everton breached their allowed spending of a £105m loss over three seasons by £16.6m. The independent commission handling the case considered various moderating factors, leading to the reduction of the initial proposed five-point deduction to two points. Everton, dissatisfied with the outcome, has expressed intentions to appeal the decision. The club brings up moderate circumstances such as overlapping penalties, the loss of sponsorship due to geopolitical events, & their early admission of the breach.
In the words of Everton’s official statement regarding the deduction: “While the Club’s position has been that no further sanction was appropriate, the Club is pleased to see that the Commission has given credit to the majority of the issues raised by the Club, including the concept of double punishment, the significant mitigating circumstances facing the Club due to the war in Ukraine, & the high level of co-operation and early admission of the Club’s breach.”
The impact of these points deductions on Everton’s league standing has been significant. Before the latest deduction, Everton was positioned 15th in the Premier League table, just four points above the relegation zone. The subsequent drop to 16th place, only two points clear of the 18th-placed team, has heightened concerns among fans & stakeholders.
The PSR regulations aim to prevent clubs from overspending & facing financial instability. Clubs are required to limit their losses to £105m over three years, with strict guidelines on the sources of funding to cover these losses. The rules are crucial for maintaining the long-term sustainability of clubs & the overall health of the league.
