Fiorentina Claims Lead Against Atalanta In Coppa Italia Semi-final
Fiorentina showcased their resilience & determination as they clinched a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Atalanta in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.
The game kicked off with Atalanta facing early pressure from Fiorentina, who were eager to make amends for a recent defeat to AC Milan. Despite Giacomo Bonaventura & Lucas Beltran seeing their attempts blocked by’ the Atalanta defense, La Viola persisted & eventually broke the deadlock just over 30 minutes into the match.
The pivotal moment arrived when Nicolás González laid off the ball for Rolando Mandragora, who unleashed a thunderous strike from a distance that rattled the inside of the left post before nestling into the top corner of the net. The goal sent the home crowd into raptures & provided Fiorentina with a vital lead as they sought to extend their impressive record of only one loss in their last seven Coppa Italia matches.
As the second half unfolded, Atalanta struggled to assert their usual dominance, with Fiorentina continuing to apply pressure & create scoring opportunities. González, a constant threat for the Atalanta defense, came close to doubling Fiorentina’s lead with a series of chances, only to be denied by’ goalkeeper Carnesecchi.
Atalanta, known for their attacking skills, rallied in the final stages of the game in search of an equalizer. Gianluca Scamacca’s well-struck effort threatened Fiorentina’s lead, but goalkeeper Pietro Terracciano produced a magnificent save to maintain his side’s advantage & secure a vital clean sheet.
The final whistle confirmed Fiorentina’s 1-0 victory, marking a significant step towards their quest for Coppa Italia glory. The stage is now set for a thrilling second leg at the Stadio di Bergamo on April 24. where both teams will battle fiercely for a place in the final & the chance to lift the prestigious trophy.
Fiorentina lost the final to Inter Milan last season and Atalanta was defeated in the trophy match in 2019 & 2021 by’ Lazio & Juventus respectively. Fiorentina last won the Italian Cup in 2001, while Atalanta hasn’t lifted it since 1963.
