Gotham FC Clinches NWSL Championship As Megan Rapinoe Sustains Major Injury
Gotham FC emerged victorious in the 2023 NWSL Championship, with Midge Purce shining as the MVP and Megan Rapinoe facing a challenging moment due to an Achilles injury.
In her final game, Rapinoe had to leave the field early, marking the end of her illustrious career.
Meanwhile, Ali Krieger, a defender for Gotham, bid farewell to her career in a storybook fashion. Lynn Williams, a teammate of Rapinoe and Krieger in the US national team, showcased an outstanding performance by scoring the opening goal.
However, Midge Purce stole the spotlight, earning the MVP title and contributing assists for both of Gotham’s goals. Despite a red card for their goalkeeper, New Jersey’s Nealy Martin stepped up to the challenge. Ultimately, the opposing wall blocked Rose Lavelle’s close-range free kick, rendering Mandy Haught’s earlier error inconsequential.
Gotham, who ended up in last place in 2022, completed a compelling “worst-to-first” comeback, convincingly securing their first-ever championship trophy during their inaugural championship appearance.
