Leganes Ends Atletico Madrid’s 15-Match Winning Streak In Shocking
Atlético Madrid’s impressive 15-game winning streak across all competitions came to an unexpected halt as they faced Leganés, who secured their first-ever top-flight victory over the Colchoneros with a 1-0 win at Butarque.
Promising Start for Leganés
The match kicked off with Leganés looking to catch Atlético off guard right from the start. Juan Cruz wasted no time, curling a first-time shot that narrowly missed Jan Oblak’s right post.
This early attempt set the tone for a match that would be filled with tension and drama.
However, Atlético Madrid quickly began to assert their dominance as they sought to maintain their winning momentum.
Julián Alvarez, who had been in fine form, came close to scoring again, only for his right-footed strike to clip the outside of the far post. The woodwork would become a frustrating theme for Atlético in the first half, as both Antoine Griezmann and Conor Gallagher also had attempts that struck the frame of Marko Dmitrović’s goal.
Despite their dominance in possession and chances created, Atlético could not find the back of the net, and the first half ended in a stalemate.
Leganés Takes the Lead
The second half saw a dramatic shift in momentum. Just three minutes in, Leganés stunned the visitors by taking the lead. Former Manchester City defender Matija Nastasić rose above his marker to power home a header from Dani Raba’s corner.
Diego Simeone, Atlético’s manager, responded swiftly by introducing Koke and Marcos Llorente from the bench, hoping to turn the tide in favor of his side.
However, Leganés was resolute and determined to protect their lead. They nearly doubled their advantage when Cruz found himself in a promising position in the Atlético box but fired over the bar, leaving fans on the edge of their seats.
Missed Chances
As the match neared its conclusion, Atlético Madrid was granted a lifeline. A VAR review led to a penalty being awarded after Sergio González was deemed to have handled the ball in the box.
Antoine Griezmann, stepped up to take the penalty.
However, in a moment of disbelief, he dragged his spot-kick wide, much to the relief of the Leganés supporters.
This miss proved to be pivotal, as it sealed Leganés’ historic victory and left Atlético Madrid reeling. The defeat ended their winning streak and also put pressure on their title race, with the possibility of dropping to second place by the end of Matchday 20 looming large.
