Mikel Arteta Agrees New Contract As Arsenal Manager
Mikel Arteta is said to have agreed terms with Arsenal over a new contract running until 2027.
The Spaniard’s current contract in the Emirates Stadium dugout is set to expire at the end of this season, leading to speculation about both his and the’s dedication to their ongoing project.
However, The Athletic reports an extension to Arteta’s contract is in place, and an official announcement to follow will end speculation regarding his future.
Since returning to Arsenal as head coach in late 2019, Arteta has had a transformative impact on the team, guiding a faltering Gunners squad to victory in the FA Cup during his first season at the club.
In the summer of 2020, Arteta’s job title was changed from head coach to manager, though on-field hopes in the short term simmered after recording successive eighth-place finishes in the Premier League.
However, in the following three years, Arsenal reasserted itself as one of the top teams in England.
They were narrowly edged out for fourth place and a return to the UEFA Champions League in the 2021/22 season by rivals Tottenham Hotspur, launching an unexpected title challenge the following year. Despite holding the top position in the table for an impressive 248 days, a record duration without winning the Premier League, they ultimately lost out to Manchester City for the title.
Last season, Arsenal’s title hopes went to the wire as they finished just a point behind City, who rallied for their fourth straight league title the first team to do so in English history.
Alongside director Edu, Arteta has also been recognized for Arsenal’s notable progress in recruitment in recent years, in addition to the team’s on-pitch performances.
