MLS: Lionel Messi Shines As Inter Miami Defeats Nashville
Inter Miami secured a 3-1 victory over Nashville in Major League Soccer match on Saturday at Chase Stadium, with Lionel Messi playing a pivotal role in the win.
The game started with Nashville taking the lead in the second minute through an unfortunate deflection from Franco Negri from Daniel Lovitz’s corner into his own net. However, Messi quickly equalized in the 11th minute after a clever flick from Diego Gomez saw a shot parried out by Nashville keeper Elliot Panicco, but after Luis Suarez directed the loose ball back to him Messi slotted home to make it 1-1.
As the match progressed, Messi continued to dominate the proceedings, orchestrating Miami’s attacking play with his trademark flair and vision. His influence was further evident when Sergio Busquets, another Barcelona combination, found the back of the net with a precise glancing header from Messi’s corner, putting Miami ahead before halftime.
Despite their lead, Miami suffered a setback just before the break when Paraguay international Gomez had to be stretchered off due to an ankle injury, adding to their growing list of sidelined players. However, the introduction of Brazilian youngster Leonardo Afonso injected fresh energy into the team, although his goal was disallowed for offside. Nashville came out strong in the second half, dominating possession but failing to convert their chances, with Miami’s defense holding firm.
The game took a decisive turn in the 81st minute when Afonso was brought down inside the box, leading to a penalty that Messi coolly dispatched, securing his ninth goal in as many games in all competitions this season.
Despite facing injuries and a depleted squad, Miami’s coach Gerardo Martino praised the team’s performance and resilience in collecting 18 points from their opening 10 games. He highlighted the challenges they faced but remained optimistic about their prospects for the rest of the season.
In other MLS matches on the same day, Columbus Crew fought back to secure a 2-2 draw with Portland Timbers, while Cincinnati claimed a 2-1 victory against Atlanta United.
