Phil Foden Unlikely To Feature In England’s Nations League Matches

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, said midfielder Phil Foden is unlikely to join up with the England squad for Nations League fixtures against Ireland and Finland due to illness.

Foden was called up by interim England manager, Lee Carsley for matches in Dublin on September 7th and against Finland at Wembley three days later.

He has only featured for City this season, coming on as a substitute in their Premier League opener against Chelsea two weeks ago.

The only reason he played against Chelsea was because of the injury to Savinho, and he may not have featured at all had the Brazilian stayed on.

Foden returned to City later than usual after receiving an extended break due to his efforts in Euro 2024. Similarly, Kyle Walker and John Stones were also given longer breaks.

Foden is now set to come back after the international break, and he will seek to build his match sharpness.

After the game with West Ham, Pep suggested that Foden actually may not be well enough to join up with the England squad.

“I don’t think so right now,” Guardiola said when asked about Foden joining the England team. “I think he will not go but I don’t know. He doesn’t feel well. But national teams, they decide.”

Foden has earned 41 caps for England and started all of their games at Euro 2024 in Germany.
