Former Manchester United fullback and current Portland Timbers head coach Phil Neville has come to the defence of Bruno Fernandes amidst criticism regarding his captaincy and demeanour on the field.

Several ex-United players have questioned Fernandes’ leadership qualities and on-field conduct, drawing comparisons to the legendary United captain, Roy Keane, under whom Neville played.

Addressing the criticism during an NBC interview, Neville vehemently dismissed the notion that Fernandes purposefully earned a yellow card against Bournemouth to avoid playing against Liverpool, labelling such claims as “ridiculous” and branding those making such public statements as a disgrace.”

Expressing his admiration for Fernandes, Neville emphasized, “I love Bruno Fernandes, and he genuinely cares about Manchester United. When you observe the top-six teams, he stands out. He’s the player I would pick without hesitation. After a defeat, Fernandes is the one who emerges, displaying the characteristics of past captains.”

Drawing parallels between Fernandes and Roy Keane, Neville highlighted similarities in their passionate approach to the game.

He stated, “Roy Keane exhibited similar traits—complaining and showing determination, much like Bruno Fernandes. Within this team, he stands as the best player, seamlessly transitioning between positions because of his dedication to the club.”

Neville’s unwavering support for Fernandes centred on the Portuguese midfielder’s commitment to Manchester United, emphasizing his pivotal role both on and off the field, akin to the influential figures who led the club in the past.
