Sergi Roberto Will Not Renew His Contract With Barcelona
On June 30th, Barcelona announced the departure of Marcos Alonso, whose contract was set to expire on that date.
Sergi Roberto did too, but curiously, his exit was not confirmed nor announced by the club, although his employment was no longer.
Roberto had been promised a new contract during Xavi Hernandez’s tenure However, circumstances have shifted since Hansi Flick took over, and it seems Barcelona is currently unable to offer Roberto a new contract.
In recent weeks, Roberto has been holding out for a return to Barcelona, putting off offers from the Premier League in the process. He’s also be using at the club’s training complex, although not as part of Hansi Flick’s squad since he doesn’t have a contract.
The saga is now coming to an end, and it’s not a happy solution for Roberto. MD has reported that a farewell ceremony for the 32-year-old will be held on Tuesday at Auditori 1899 within the Spotify Camp Nou.
Roberto has been with Barcelona since 2006, but his time at the club is to an end, he was unable to receive guarantees that he’d be re-registered upon signing, so it makes sense for a clean break to occur.
Roberto awaiting Sevilla’s salary space problem
According to Diario AS, Roberto’s move to Sevilla is being hindered by the Andalusian club’s salary cap constraints.
Roberto’s versatility and experience would be valuable additions to Sevilla’s squad, especially after the recent departures of key players like Fernando Reges, Ivan Rakitic, and Sergio Ramos.
The club is also preparing for the imminent retirement of Jesus Navas in December, and Serbian midfielder Nemanja Gudelj is reportedly considering a lucrative offer from the Middle East.
Gudelj’s potential exit could create the necessary salary cap room for Roberto’s acquisition. While Roberto isn’t a natural defensive pivot, their capacity to occupy comparable roles makes him an appealing asset.
His arrival would complement Sevilla’s recent acquisition of Saul Niguez from Atlético Madrid, strengthening the team’s midfield options.
With only 20 days remaining in the summer transfer window, both Roberto and Sevilla are eager to finalize the move.
Roberto, a veteran with more than ten years at Barcelona, is eager to continue his career in a familiar environment under García Pimienta’s guidance.
Interestingly, isn’t the only Barcelona player seeking a transfer to Sevilla Ansu Fati has also caught the attention of the Andalusian club.
A last-minute loan deal for Fati is a possibility, though it faces challenges due to his high salary demands and interest from wealthier suitors.
Nevertheless, Sevilla remains optimistic and committed to exploring all options until the window closes.
