Sergio Herrera Regrets Spanish Super Cup Played In Saudi Arabia Not In Spain
After losing to Real Madrid and Barcelona in the semifinals, Sergio Herrera, the goalkeeper for Osasuna, stated that it appeared the Spanish Super Cup was made for clubs like that to play in.
Following their 0-2 loss to Barcelona last night, a number of Osasuna players, including their captain, voiced their displeasure with the choices made by the referees, claiming that even 50-50 challenges were awarded in favour of Barcelona.
The Osasuna players were undoubtedly angry over being eliminated from the Spanish Super Cup.
According to camera evidence and VAR, “They contend that Andreas Christensen’s foul on Jose Arnaiz set up Barcelona’s opening goal, and they feel that the outcome could have been drastically different. But there was no foul.”
Herrera said, as quoted by SPORT, “The Super Cup is made for Madrid and Barça to play. Anyone who doesn’t watch it doesn’t watch much football,”
“I don’t agree with it, but it’s normal that they (the Saudi public) want to see these two teams and that’s why they pay them more.”
In addition, the Osasuna goalkeeper expressed disappointment that Saudi Arabia, rather than Spain, is hosting the Spanish Super Cup.
“This is a competition that should be experienced with our people. We are Spanish teams and the Spanish fans should enjoy it. We come here because it is our profession and that’s it,” Herrera noted.
In their previous meetings, Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid and Xavi’s Barcelona have a draw. Both teams have participated in eight official games since Xavi took control, with four victories apiece.
It’s interesting to note that on January 12, 2022, Xavi and Ancelotti played in the Spanish Super Cup. Xavi’s squad lost 2-3 in extra time. But Barcelona won the Spanish Super Cup final last year, prevailing 3-1, to exact their revenge. It’s crucial to remember that Real Madrid has defeated Barcelona in their last two meetings.
