UEFA has levied a £25,000 (€29,000) fine on Celtic due to fan-related incidents during their recent Champions League showdown against Atletico Madrid. The penalties stem from various issues, including fans displaying an offensive message, blocking public pathways, and igniting fireworks during the intense fixture at Parkhead.

The Hoops faced consequences for defying club requests by showcasing flags and banners related to the Middle East conflict, resulting in a £15,222 (€17,500) fine for the display of an offensive message. Additionally, the club was penalized £6,960 (€8,000) for fan obstruction of public passageways and £3,044 (€3,500) for the use of fireworks during the match.

Atletico Madrid also faced UEFA sanctions related to the fiery encounter in Glasgow. The Spanish club was fined £2,610 (€3,000) for their supporters’ use of fireworks and received a warning for the team’s improper conduct.

This marks the third instance in the current Champions League campaign where Celtic has incurred financial penalties due to fan-related issues. Previous fines of £20,387 (€23,400) and £17,427 (€20,000) followed incidents involving fireworks and offensive banners during matches against Feyenoord and Lazio, respectively.

Amidst tensions with fan group the Green Brigade, Celtic has issued strict guidelines for their upcoming Champions League fixture against Lazio in Rome. Supporters have been instructed that all flags, banners, and drums must be pre-approved by the Italian club before the match.
