World No. 1, Jannik Sinner To Play Singles, Doubles At Paris Olympics
The newly-crowned world number Tennis star, Jannik Sinner, is set to participate in both singles and doubles matches at the Paris Olympics, announced by the Italian Tennis Federation on Friday.
Sportxparte reports that at the age of 22, Sinner is embarking on his Olympic journey for the first time, where he will face clay court challenges at the Roland Garros, the venue where he advanced to the semi-finals of the French Open just last week.
Sinner has secured three victories in 2024, marking his debut at a Grand Slam with wins at the Australian Open, Rotterdam, and Miami.
In the singles competition, Sinner will be joined by Lorenzo Musetti, Matteo Arnaldi, ranked 34th in the world, and Luciano Darderi, ranked 41st.
For the doubles event, Sinner and Musetti will team up with the French Open runners-up, Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli.
The Italian women’s team also includes Jasmine Paolini, who reached the final of the French Open and is ranked seventh, Elisabetta Cocciaretto, ranked 43rd, and Lucia Bronzetti, ranked 68th in the world.
Paolini and Sara Errani will also compete in doubles following their appearance in the women’s final at Roland Garros last week.
Recall that Sinner recently made history by ascending to the coveted world No.1 ranking, as announced by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) in their latest rankings release.
Sportxparte reports that this achievement marks a significant milestone for Sinner, who became the first Italian player to hold the top spot in the tennis world.
Sinner’s remarkable journey to the summit included a notable performance in the French Open, where he reached the semi-finals.
However, he faced defeat at the hands of the eventual champion, Carlos Alcaraz, who himself climbed to second place in the rankings.
This outcome also resulted in the Serbian tennis maestro Novak Djokovic, who had held the No.1 spot since last September, slipping down to third place.
