Xavi Hernandez’s Future At Barcelona In Doubt After Public Dispute With Laporta

Xavi Hernandez had initially planned to leave his position as Barca manager this summer but has since had a change of heart, expressing his desire to continue with his project.

However, tensions have resurfaced following Xavi’s recent press conference where he stated that Barcelona would struggle to compete with Real Madrid without significant new signings, which he acknowledged were unlikely to materialize.

Reports from AS indicate that Laporta was furious by Xavi’s recent comments, especially considering that the manager had expressed contrary statement in a private discussion just a few weeks prior. Laporta was reportedly so upset that he opted not to join the team for Thursday’s match against Almeria.

In response to the situation, Laporta has instructed Barcelona officials to begin scouting for potential replacements for Xavi. This aligns with reports from RAC1, suggesting that a decision has already been reached to dismiss the former midfielder at the conclusion of the season.

Barcelona’s sporting director Deco reportedly traveled to Portugal and is believed to have departed in order to explore the possibility of recruiting Porto manager Sergio Conceicao.

According to The Athletic, Laporta’s anger largely originate from the club’s efforts to secure Xavi’s desired transfer targets. Barcelona notably offloaded valuable assets to generate funds for signings such as Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, and Raphinha. Therefore, Xavi’s recent public assertion that he is lacking sufficient backing in the transfer market has not been well-received.

Xavi’s management of Vitor Roque has reportedly caused frustration among the Barca board members, especially considering that he had given the green light for the signing of the young striker back in January.

It is worth noting that Marca’s report emphasizes that Laporta has no intention of severing ties with Xavi, despite the existing frustrations.

Following Thursday’s 2-0 victory, Xavi was questioned about the ongoing speculation and maintained that he will continue as the manager for the upcoming season.

“They have not told me anything,” Xavi said of Laporta and Deco. “Our relationship has not changed. Everything is normal. I said what I think is real. We fight for all the trophies and I have ambition and enthusiasm, but the situation is not easy. It does not change our reality. I am totally sure that I will be the coach next season. I have the hope that I will retain the honour of being part of this club.”

He continued, “I have the ambition to win titles, but the situation is not the best, but we are working to reverse it. I am calm and have the utmost enthusiasm, and that’s what I have told the president and Deco. The staff are excited and eager. Nobody has told me otherwise.”

“I really want to compete and fight for Barca to win titles again, and I really want to do so with enthusiasm and ambition. We’re already planning with Deco and the president for next season.”
