AFCON: Lagos Govt Sets Up 25 Viewing Centres Ahead Of Nigeria Vs South Africa Semi-Final Match

The government of Lagos State led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has set up football viewing centres for residents to watch the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.

SportXparte reports that the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Bafana Bafana of South Africa will be facing off in a highly anticipated match today.

To ensure that the residents of Lagos can fully enjoy this exciting game, the Lagos State Government has established a mega viewing centre at Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos.

This is just one of the 25 viewing centres that have been set up across the state, allowing both young and old residents to come together and experience the thrills and entertainment that football brings.

The ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, which started on January 13, 2024, has seen Nigeria perform exceptionally well, as they have not lost a single match so far.

The match between Nigeria and South Africa will kick off at 6 pm, and Lagos residents living around Onikan Stadium, now renamed Mobolaji Johnson Arena, can experience a view from the centres established by the government.

In a statement, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, highlighted the significance of Lagos as the sports capital and the home to the largest supporters of the Super Eagles.

According to Omotoso, Governor Sanwo-Olu recognized the importance of providing an opportunity for all fans to watch the match, hence the establishment of these viewing centres.

“Mr Governor expressed the hope that the national team will triumph in the match because the team has so far shown the capacity and technical know-how to win,” he wrote on his official X handle.

Apart from the Mega Viewing Centre at Onikan, other centres are located in Agege Stadium, Abesan Sports Centre, Alimosho LGA Secretariat, Agbado-Oke Odo, Local Council Development Area, LCDA, Secretariat, L.A. Primary School, Layeni, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Anglican Primary School, Aradagun, Badagry.

Other include New Road Primary School, Ajegunle, Femi Gbajabiamila Mini Stadium, Coker-Aguda, Surulere, Epe Recreation Centre, Sprite Court, Festac, Igando-Ikotun LCDA Secretariat, Onisabe of Igbobi’s Palace, Jibowu, Alajede’s Palace, Ijede, Oba’s Palace, Ijegun, Ikorodu Town Hall, APC Party Secretariat, Ketu.

Also listed as viewing centres are: Campos Mini Stadium, Lagos, Lagos House Car Park, Marina, Mushin Public Library, YMD Garden, Ojo, Olera Football Pitch, Ojokoro Housing Estate, Afolabi Primary School, Oshodi, Papa Playing Field, Oworonsoki and Rowe Park Sports Centre, Yaba.
