Aston Villa Goalkeeper Emi Martínez Signs Contract Extension
Emi Martinez has signed a new contract with Aston Villa until 2029.
The goalkeeper last signed a new contract in January 2022, which had been due to expire in June 2027.
Martinez joined Aston Villa from Arsenal in September 2020 and quickly established himself as one of the League’s top goalkeepers. In his first season with Villa, he achieved 15 clean sheets and was honored with the club’s Player of the Year award.
Since joining the West Midlands side, Martinez has established himself as Argentina’s No. 1, winning two Copa America titles and the 2022 World Cup with his national team. He won the Golden Glove award at all three of those tournaments.
Martinez has made 160 appearances for Aston Villa, recording 54 clean sheets. Before joining Villa permanently, he had loan spells at several clubs, including Reading, Rotherham, and Sheffield Wednesday.
Villa began their 2024-25 season with a 2-1 win at West Ham United last Saturday.
They return to action at home against Martinez’s former side, Arsenal, this Saturday and will discover their Champions League opponents during Thursday’s group-stage draw.
