Aston Villa Reaches Agreement With Luton Over Ross Barkley
According to Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa has verbally agreed with Luton Town on the acquisition of Ross Barkley.
The transfer fee is approximately £5 million, pending completion pending only the completion of the player’s medical tests and formal signature.
Barkley move back to Villa Park would mark his return for a second stint, after his loan spell during the 2020/21 season. During this period, he made 18 Premier League starts under Dean Smith, the most he has achieved in a season since 2016/17, apart from his recent campaign with Luton.
After a less than impressive spell of four and a half years at Chelsea and a mostly uneventful season at OGC Nice in 2022, the 30-year-old player signed with Rob Edwards’ recently promoted team last August on a free transfer, aiming to rejuvenate his career.
Ross Barkley also played a crucial part in Luton Town FC’s determined battle to avoid relegation. In his 30 appearances in the league, the 33-time capped England player scored five goals and provided four assists. Additionally, he led in shot-creating actions, successful take-ons, ball recoveries, and passes compared to all his teammates.
Ross Barkley will be a significant asset to Unai Emery’s team, who are seeking to strengthen their roster as they gear up for Champions League football for the first time since the 1982-83 season, back when it was known as the European Cup.
