Barcelona has confirmed the signing of the Spain attacking midfielder, Dani Olmo, from RB Leipzig.

The 26-year-old began his career at Barcelona Academy before transferring to Dinamo in Croatia in 2014 at the age of 16 and subsequently joined Leipzig in January 2020.

Six years later, Olmo made the move to Leipzig, where he would rack up 29 goals and 34 assists in 148 appearances before his return to Barcelona.

Barcelona announced that Olmo had signed a six-year contract in a deal reportedly valued at around €60 million (£51M), with a buy clause set at €500 million.

Speaking about his departure to the Leipzig website, Olmo said: “It was indescribable to play for this club and in front of these fans. It was a dream for me to move from Croatia to Leipzig four and a half years ago.

“The city became my home in recent years, years that have had a huge impact on me as a footballer, but also as a person. I will be forever grateful for that.”

According to SPORT, Olmo’s family have been spotted celebrating the transfer in Barcelona shirts which feature his name alongside the number 20, which has been vacated by Sergi Roberto’s summer departure.

Olmo has never worn the number 20 before. He previously wore the number 7 at Leipzig and currently holds the number 10 for Spain, but it looks like he is set to adopt a new shirt number this season.

Reports indicate that Barcelona officials remain hopeful of reuniting Olmo with another Spain star, Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, whose contract includes a release clause of €58m.

Indeed, club president, Joan Laporta is reported to have taken personal responsibility for the negotiations over Williams in the hope of convincing him to walk away from Athletic this summer.
