Barcelona Needs More Sale To Register Dani Olmo Despite Gundogan’s Departure
It seems confirmed that Ilkay Gundogan will return to Manchester City on a free transfer just a year after joining Barcelona.
The Blaugrana are eager to reduce his wages to address their salary cap challenges since their only summer signing, Dani Olmo, has yet to register for La Liga.
Gundogan’s departure is due to save the Blaugrana somewhere between €15-20m, 70% of which they can put towards registering Olmo.
While the exact earnings of the former RB Leipzig player are not known, his six-year contract suggests that the overall cost of his transfer will be approximately €10 million per season.
It was leaked that Gundogan’s exit would allow Barcelona to register Olmo, but Cadena Cope says that they must do more business still to be able to play the 26-year-old against Athletic Club in their home debut.
Barcelona is reportedly in discussions with Nike regarding an enhanced sponsorship deal, but those have been dragging on for months.
To more financial flexibility, the club may consider options such as Vitor Roque’s loan to Real Betis, Clement Lenglet’s prospective move to Atletico Madrid, or Mikayil Faye’s potential move too.
Whether they get those deals over the line in time for Olmo to make his debut this Saturday is firmly in doubt.
