Bayer Leverkusen Coach Announces Decision To Stay At The Club
Xabi Alonso has put an end to all doubts by’ confirming his commitment to Bayer Leverkusen beyond the 2023/24 season. The 42-year-old has been instrumental in leading Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title, with the team currently sitting 10 points clear of defending champions Bayern Munich with just eight games remaining.
Alonso’s journey at the BayArena since his arrival in October 2022 has been nothing short of extraordinary. From guiding the team from the relegation zone to creating a squad capable of going unbeaten in a German record 38 competitive fixtures in the current season, his impact has been undeniable. Under his guidance, Leverkusen has transformed into a formidable force, aiming for a potential treble as they continue their quest for Bundesliga glory, success in the DFB Cup, & a strong showing in the UEFA Europa League.
During a press conference, Alonso expressed his gratitude towards the club, stating, “We’ve had a lot of speculation regarding my future…I informed them of my decision to continue as coach of Bayer Leverkusen. It’s the right place for me to be, to develop as a coach.” He further added, “The fans showed great support this year…My job is not over here…We want to contend for important things. We also want to keep the core of the team next season.”
Alonso’s decision to stay at Leverkusen comes after intense rumors linking him with coaching positions at his former clubs, Bayern Munich & Liverpool, both of which will have vacant managerial roles at the end of the season. Despite his strong ties to these clubs, Alonso emphasized his belief in Leverkusen’s project, saying, “I am in the right place at Leverkusen and we want to keep growing together.”
“This year has been great. Let’s see how far we can reach. We want to contend for important things. We also want to keep the core of the team next season. “Alonso refused to speak about the links to Bayern and Liverpool: “It wouldn’t be correct for me to talk about other clubs, but for sure they are clubs with which I have strong links. But this is more about my conviction that I am in the right place at Leverkusen & we want to keep growing together.”
Regarding the future & potential opportunities elsewhere, Alonso remained focused on the present, stating, “We can’t start speculating about the future. Right now I am enjoying life at Leverkusen.” His firm dedication to the club &the team’s remarkable performances under his guidance have solidified his position as one of the most sought-after coaches in European football.
