Nigeria recorded its first 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) match victory against Ivory Cost on Thursday, thanks to William Troost-Ekong.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated the 2023 AFCON host today under an intense atmosphere to record their first victory in the ongoing tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.

Sportxparte reports that the first half ended in a draw, with both sides aiming for a win. However, the match ended in favour of Jose Jose Peseiro’s men.

A penalty spot kick won by Captain Troost-Ekong gave the Eagles of Nigeria the victory against Ivory Coast.

Prior to scoring the goal, both teams had opportunities, but it was the Nigerian team that squandered the most chances in front of the net.

Coach Jose Peseiro of the Super Eagles decided to make two changes to the lineup that played in the 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday.

In the attack, Samuel Chukwueze took the place of Moses Simon, while Calvin Bassey was included in the starting eleven to replace the injured midfielder Alhassan Yusuf.

Additionally, Kelechi Iheanacho, the forward from Leicester City, who was unable to play in the last game due to injury, has returned to the team. However, he will begin the match on the bench.
