Bruno Guimarães Becomes Newcastle’s New Captain

Ahead of the 2024/25 season, Newcastle United appointed Bruno Guimaraes as their new captain before their opening Premier League match against Southampton.

The Brazilian wore the captain’s armband for the first time in a competitive match against Southampton on Saturday, as captain Jamaal Lascelles was injured and vice-captain Kieran Trippier started the game on the bench.

Trippier has led the team during the majority of matches since arriving from Atletico Madrid in January 2022, but that will now be the duty of Guimaraes.

Eddie Howe believes the midfielder will thrive given the extra responsibility and is thought to have wanted clarity around the situation of who captains the team permanently, with Guimaraes promoted to the role.

“I always said I would like to put my name in the club’s history. I can’t wait to do my best for the club and the fans”, Bruno said this summer.

Lascelles has been promoted to a newly established role as ‘ captain,’ while Tripper will retain his as vice-captain.

He will also be part of the leadership group alongside Dan Burn, Callum Wilson, and Jacob Murphy

Trippier’s future on the Tyneside side remains uncertain. There is interest from home and abroad, but Howe wants him to stay, with staff sure the England star will be a leader with or without the armband.

Guimaraes, on the other hand, is highly regarded by Manchester City, but sources are confident he will still be at St James’ Park beyond next Friday’s transfer deadline.
