CAF Slams Samuel Eto’o $200,000 Fine Over Ambassadorship Deal
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has taken disciplinary action against Cameroon Football Association President, Samuel Eto’o, for breaching ethical standards.
In a press release on Thursday, CAF revealed that Eto’o was under investigation for “charges related to alleged tampering with football games and for violating ethical and integrity principles.”
The organization has imposed a $200,000 fine on the ex-Barcelona player.
The statement titled, ‘CAF Disciplinary Board outcome on FECAFOOT President Samuel Eto’o Fils, partly read, “The Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) Disciplinary Board sat on the matter of Fédération Camerounaise de Football (‘’FECAFOOT’’) President Mr Samuel Eto’o Fils.
The Disciplinary Board concluded that currently, there isn’t enough evidence to determine if Samuel Eto’o Fils and Valentin Nkwain are guilty of tampering with matches.
Nonetheless, the Disciplinary Board deemed Mr. Eto’o to have gravely breached the ethical, integrity, and sportsmanship standards outlined in Article 2 Paragraph 3 of the CAF Statutes by entering into a Brand Ambassador deal with the firm 1XBET for payment, leading to a fine of 200,000 USD for Mr Eto’o.
Since taking over as the President of the Cameroon FA in 2021, Eto’o has been embroiled in numerous controversies. He was recorded assaulting a cameraman outside a stadium during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022.
The following year, Eto’o was investigated by the CAF for possible misconduct in response to complaints from various stakeholders in Cameroonian football.
