Carvajal’s Injury Woes Continue As Real Madrid Star Set For Knee Surgery
Real Madrid captain, Dani Carvajal, will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee after experiencing discomfort following Sunday’s El Clásico win over Barcelona.
The 33-year-old defender, who came on as a second-half substitute, underwent medical tests on Monday to assess the extent of the injury. The procedure could rule the Spain international out for the rest of the calendar year.
“Following tests carried out on our captain, Dani Carvajal, by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a loose joint in his right knee,” a club statement read on Monday evening.
“Carvajal will undergo arthroscopy.”
The British National Health Service (NHS) describes arthroscopy as “a type of keyhole surgery for checking or repairing your joints”.
Keyhole surgery is where only small cuts are made into the body, involving a camera used to diagnose and treat joint problems.
Real Madrid expects Dani Carvajal to be out for at least six weeks, potentially keeping him sidelined until January 2026.
The victory over Barcelona marked his first appearance since suffering a calf injury in September’s 5-2 loss to Atlético Madrid.
This latest setback affects the same knee in which he tore two ligaments and a tendon in October 2024, an injury that ruled him out for the rest of last season.
Valverde, normally a midfielder, started at right-back on Sunday, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has just returned from injury, available as a substitute in that position.
