Copa America: Argentina Cruises Past Peru To Maintain Perfect Record
Argentina secured their spot in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Copa América with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Peru at the Hard Rock Stadium.
This win marked Argentina’s fifth consecutive triumph in the tournament and maintained their flawless record, displaying the strength and depth of their squad.
Despite making nine changes to their starting lineup for the final group stage match, Argentina’s quality shone through as they controlled the game from the onset.
Assistant coach Walter Samuel, standing in for the suspended Lionel Scaloni, would have been pleased with the determination and attacking intent displayed by his side, even though clear-cut chances were initially hard to come by against a resilient Peru defense.
The breakthrough came in the second half when Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez displayed his poise and skill by delicately chipping the ball over Peru’s goalkeeper, following a sublime assist from Angel Di Maria.
This goal highlighted Martinez’s scoring prowess and also emphasized Argentina’s ability to capitalize on key moments in the match.
Although Nicolas Tagliafico’s goal from a corner was disallowed for offside and Leandro Paredes saw his penalty strike the upright, Argentina’s persistence paid off with Martinez’s second goal of the night a classy chip that sealed the victory and extended their winning streak to eight matches.
The absence of superstar Lionel Messi, who was nursing a hamstring injury, did not deter Argentina’s quest for success, as other players stepped up to deliver a commanding performance.
