Copa America: CONMEBOL Suspends Argentina And Chile Coaches

CONMEBOL announced on Friday that Argentina coach, Lionel Scaloni, and Chile coach, Ricardo Gareca, have each been suspended for one match due to their teams’ delayed arrival on the field during the Copa America.

During their Copa America opener against Canada last week, defending champions Argentina arrived late for the second half.

As a response, coach Jesse Marsch suggested that Scaloni’s team should be fined. Gareca was late in bringing on a player at halftime against Argentina on Tuesday.

The governing sports body said that both coaches are suspended for one match each after their teams failed to comply with articles 104 and 145 of the tournament’s regulations, which relate to taking the field “later than the scheduled start or restart time”.

They will be unable to be on the substitutes’ bench when their teams finish the group stage of the competition on Saturday.

In addition, the Argentine and Chilean football federations were fined $15,000 each.

With six points, Argentina leads Group A and has secured a spot in the quarter-finals. They will play against Peru on Saturday. Chile, sitting with just one point, will face group runners-up Canada.
