Coventry Back Lampard With Transfer Funds And Contract Talks Amid Premier League Push

‎Coventry owner, Doug King is set to support Frank Lampard with a substantial transfer budget next month as the club aims to return to the Premier League after 25 years, and is also prepared to discuss a new contract for the head coach.

‎Lampard’s team suffered its first home defeat since April, losing to third-placed Ipswich on Monday night.

‎Despite the setback, Coventry maintains an eight-point lead over Middlesbrough at the top of the Championship, having lost just three of their 24 league games this season.

‎Coventry also has a 10-point advantage over Ipswich despite having lost twice to Kieran McKenna’s side this month, but King does not want to take any chances and is willing to invest in strengthening the squad. The club only spent a total of £8m on Kaine Kesler-Hayden and Luke Woolfenden last summer, with most of their signings coming on loan or free transfers, and has sufficient headroom under profit and sustainability regulations to be active in the market next month.

‎Lampard is reportedly keen to bolster his squad, particularly in wide positions, as Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Ephron Mason-Clark are currently the only true wingers at the club.

‎The fitness of key midfielder Jack Rudoni is also a concern, having missed two months earlier in the season due to a calf strain. He may look to bring in extra cover to address both the wide areas and midfield depth.

‎Coventry are eager to secure Lampard on a longer-term contract and may start talks next month, provided both sides believe negotiations won’t unsettle the team.

‎The former Chelsea and England midfielder will have only 12 months remaining on his current deal at the season’s end. The club is keen for him to commit to an extension.

‎Lampard’s achievements at Coventry have understandably drawn attention from other clubs.

‎Despite this, he remains happy at Coventry and appreciative of King for giving him the chance to revive his managerial career. The 47-year-old had been out of work for 18 months before his appointment in November 2024.

‎His previous spells at Everton and Chelsea, including a caretaker stint at Chelsea with just one win in 11 games, ended in dismissal.
