Dani Alves Granted 1 Million Euros Bail After Rape Conviction

Former Brazilian footballer Dani Alves has recently made headlines for his legal battle against sexual assault.

The 40-year-old sports icon was convicted of sexual assault last month and_ sentenced to 4½ years in prison.

Following an appeal, Alves has been granted release on bail for a hefty sum of €1 million ($1.1m), under strict conditions that include surrendering his passports, staying in Spain, and_ adhering to a restraining order to stay away from the victim.

This ruling has left both parties involved dissatisfied, with the victim’s lawyer expressing disappointment and_ vowing to appeal the decision.

The case, which involved a 2022 incident at a Barcelona nightclub, has been marked by’ conflicting testimonies and_ legal arguments.

Throughout the trial, evidence was presented from various sources, including the victim’s friend and_ cousin, Alves’ friend who was with him on the night of the alleged assault, as well as police officers and_ a forensic psychologist.

Alves, who has consistently maintained his innocence, faced accusations of changing his story multiple times during the proceedings. Initially denying the allegations, he later admitted to having sexual relations with the victim but claimed he had lied to conceal infidelity to his wife, mentioning intoxication as a factor in his actions.

“The victim was greatly shaken and_ told them she had been sexually assaulted by’ Alves,” stated the police officers who attended to the woman.

“The law defines consent as an explicit expression of a person’s will, making it clear that silence or passivity do not equal consent,” highlighted the legal expert discussing the implications of the “only yes means yes” law.
