Dramatic Late Goal Earns Portugal Victory Over Czech Republic
Portugal secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic in their Group F opener.
Portugal faced a resilient Czech side that had lost just one of their previous 14 matches.
The match proved to be a tough test for Roberto Martinez’s men, who were frustrated in the first half with attempts from distance by the likes of Nuno Mendes and Bruno Fernandes.
As the first half progressed, Portugal gained momentum, creating more opportunities with Rafael Leao and Cristiano Ronaldo coming close to breaking the deadlock.
However, Czech goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek stood tall to keep his team in the game.
After the break, Portugal continued to dominate play, with Diogo Dalot, Bernardo Silva, and Ronaldo all testing the Czech defense.
Czech managed just one shot, and zero on target before Lukas Provod curling a lovely first-time strike into the far corner.
Portugal quickly equalized within 10 minutes of taking the lead, as Robin Hranac accidentally scored an own goal when Stanek pushed the ball into his feet.
Despite Diogo Jota’s belief that he had secured the win with a header, which was later disallowed due to Ronaldo being offside in the build-up, Conceicao emerged as the hero by smashing the ball home after Hranac failed to clear a low cross.
The victory eased the pressure on Portugal, who showed their resilience and determination to secure the win.
Meanwhile, the Czech Republic will need to regroup and show more attacking intent in their next match against Georgia to keep their hopes of progressing from the group alive.
