‘Embarrassing, Disgraceful, And Sickening’ – Mikel Arteta Blasts VAR Decision

In a surprising move, Arsenal has issued a statement expressing unwavering backing for manager Mikel Arteta’s remarks following the team’s defeat to Newcastle. The club affirms its full support for Arteta’s comments in the wake of the contentious and heated match last night. Arteta had strongly criticized the refereeing as an ‘outright disgrace’ and ‘shameful.’

Arsenal revealed that the statement was made subsequent to “yet more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors on Saturday evening.”

Arsenal experienced their initial league loss of the season due to a disputed Anthony Gordon goal that underwent a four-minute VAR review. Despite checking for multiple factors, such as the ball going out of play, a push on Gabriel, and a potential offside, VAR couldn’t find definitive evidence to disallow the goal.

A visibly frustrated Arteta vented his feelings in his post-match press conference, displaying little concern about any potential fine he might incur. The Arsenal manager also voiced his disapproval of referee Stuart Atwell’s decision not to award his team a penalty, as it seemed Eddie Nketiah was unfairly pulled down during a corner kick.

“The Premier League is the best league in the world with the best players, coaches and supporters, all of whom deserve better. PGMOL urgently needs to address the standard of officiating and focus on action which moves us all on from retrospective analysis, attempted explanations and apologies,” a statement revealed.

“We support the ongoing efforts of Chief Refereeing Officer, Howard Webb and would welcome working together to achieve the world-class officiating standards our league demands.”

It’s yet uncertain whether Arteta will encounter any consequences for openly criticizing the match officials. The Gunners will be focusing on their upcoming Champions League match against Sevilla at home this Wednesday, giving them a break from the Premier League’s officiating concerns, at least until Burnley visits the Emirates next Saturday.
