Erik Lamela Retires From Football, Begins New Chapter In Coaching
Erik Lamela has retired from professional football after reaching a contract termination with AEK Athens, and will begin a new chapter as Matías Almeyda’s assistant on Sevilla’s coaching staff.
The talented Argentine winger, who wore Sevilla’s colors for three seasons starting in 2021 and played a key role in the club’s 2023 Europa League triumph, has retired from professional football after accepting a proposal from his compatriot.
A product of River Plate, Lamela moved to Italy at a young age to join Roma, who signed the gifted left-footed player for about €17 million in 2011.
He has now begun a new chapter off the pitch.
Two seasons later, he joined Tottenham for a fee of around £30 million, where he remained until he was part of the deal that saw Bryan Gil join Spurs and him move to Sevilla.
His Rabona goal against Arsenal in 2021 won him the Puskas award for goal of the season.
After varying spells in La Liga, the Argentine international moved to Athens, where he played last season, scoring six goals in 31 official appearances.
Having played his last game in May, he has decided to retire as a player and join Almeyda’s coaching staff.
