Evan Ferguson Joins AS Roma On Season-Long Loan From Brighton

‎Ireland striker, Evan Ferguson, has been loaned to AS Roma for a full season from Brighton, the Serie A club announced on Wednesday.

‎The 20-year-old aims to reignite his career after a couple of less impressive seasons.

‎”Roma are delighted to announce the signing of Evan Ferguson from Brighton. Ferguson will join Roma on loan with an option to buy,” Roma said in a statement.

‎Ferguson joined Brighton from Irish club Bohemians in January 2021 at the age of 16, making his senior debut in August of that year under Graham Potter.

‎The 2022-23 campaign marked his breakthrough, with Ferguson scoring 10 goals in 25 appearances across all competitions and earning his senior debut for Ireland. But injuries soon disrupted his momentum.

‎A cruciate ligament tear ended Ferguson’s 2023-24 season early. That season, he scored a hat-trick against Newcastle United in September but struggled to secure a regular starting position under Roberto De Zerbi.

‎Last season, after not impressing new Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler, Ferguson was loaned to West Ham United in February.

‎There, he made just one start in eight appearances, all without scoring, under former Brighton manager Potter.

‎Ferguson will now look to revive his form under Roma’s new manager, Gian Piero Gasperini.

Gasperini is known for transforming Atalanta into a top Serie A side and rejuvenating the careers of many players.

‎Gasperini’s record of turning inconsistent strikers, including Duvan Zapata, Luis Muriel, Ademola Lookman, and Gianluca Scamacca, into prolific scorers offers real hope for Ferguson as he seeks a fresh start in the Italian capital.

‎There has been a wave of optimism in Rome surrounding Ferguson’s arrival. Monday’s Il Romanista newspaper even featured the striker on its front page with the headline “The Irishman.”

‎Ferguson looked visibly taken aback on Sunday as he arrived at Ciampino airport.

‎A large group of Roma fans was already there, chanting his name and asking for autographs, even before he finished his medical or signed his contract.
