FA Cup Roundup: Wrexham Push Chelsea To The Brink As Fifth Round Delivers Drama

The FA Cup once again lived up to its reputation for drama and giant-killing moments as the fifth round produced thrilling matches across England.

‎From Wrexham A.F.C. pushing Chelsea F.C. to the limit, to Arsenal F.C. keeping their quadruple hopes alive and Manchester City F.C. staging a comeback against Newcastle United F.C.

Wrexham Nearly Produce Another Famous Cup Upset

‎At the historic Racecourse Ground, Wrexham came agonizingly close to pulling off one of the greatest upsets of this season’s FA Cup.

‎The Welsh club, owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, pushed the reigning FIFA Club World Cup champions all the way before eventually falling 4-2 after extra time.

‎The home side shocked Chelsea early in the match when Sam Smith chased down a long ball from Callum Doyle and fired a low strike past goalkeeper Robert Sánchez in the 18th minute, sending the home crowd into wild celebrations.

‎Wrexham had chances to extend their lead but were punished just before halftime in unfortunate circumstances. Defender George Thomason brilliantly cleared Alejandro Garnacho’s goal-bound effort off the line, but the ball rebounded off goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo and rolled into the net for an unfortunate equalizer.

‎The drama intensified in the second half. Wrexham regained the lead in the 78th minute when Callum Doyle produced a clever backheel that redirected Josh Windass’ long-range shot into the net.

‎Chelsea responded quickly, however, with Josh Acheampong smashing home from close range just four minutes later to level the score at 2-2.

‎Wrexham’s hopes suffered a major setback when George Dobson received a red card in stoppage time, forcing the home side to play the entirety of extra time with ten men.

‎Chelsea eventually capitalized on their numerical advantage. Garnacho put the visitors ahead in the 96th minute before João Pedro sealed the victory deep into added time.

‎Even then, Wrexham nearly forced another twist when substitute Lewis Brunt headed the ball into the net, only for VAR to rule the goal out for a marginal offside after a flick from Kieffer Moore.

‎Despite the defeat, the performance highlighted how far Wrexham has come since Reynolds and McElhenney purchased the club for around $2.5 million in 2021.

‎ Just three years ago the team was playing non-league football, but they now appear on the verge of competing with the biggest clubs in England.

Arsenal Keep Quadruple Dream Alive

‎Elsewhere, Premier League leaders Arsenal survived a scare against Mansfield Town F.C. to book their place in the FA Cup quarterfinals.

‎A stunning strike from Eberechi Eze secured a 2-1 victory for the Gunners at Field Mill.

‎Arsenal initially took the lead through Noni Madueke, who curled a beautiful first-time shot into the top corner in the 41st minute.

‎However, the hosts stunned the visitors early in the second half when Will Evans punished a loose pass from Marli Salmon and fired a low effort past goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

‎The game looked destined for extra time until Eze came off the bench and delivered a moment of brilliance. Just four minutes after entering the pitch, he unleashed a thunderous strike into the top corner in the 66th minute to send Arsenal through.

‎The victory keeps Arsenal’s hopes of winning four trophies this season alive as they continue competing in the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and EFL Cup.

Marmoush Leads Manchester City Comeback

‎At St James’ Park, Omar Marmoush once again proved to be Newcastle United’s nemesis.

‎The Egyptian forward scored twice in Manchester City F.C.’s 3-1 victory over Newcastle, continuing his remarkable record against the club.

‎Newcastle had taken an early lead through Harvey Barnes in the 18th minute, but City equalized shortly before halftime when Savinho found the net.

‎Marmoush then took control after the break, scoring just two minutes into the second half and again in the 65th minute. The brace brought his tally to seven goals in five appearances against Newcastle since joining City last year.

‎The victory also means City have now eliminated Newcastle from both domestic cup competitions this season after previously beating them in the EFL Cup semifinals.

‎Southampton Pull Off Late FA Cup Shock

‎One of the biggest surprises of the round came at Craven Cottage, where Southampton F.C. defeated Fulham F.C. 1-0.

‎The match appeared destined for extra time until a dramatic moment in the 91st minute when defender Joachim Andersen brought down Finn Azaz inside the penalty area.

‎Striker Ross Stewart stepped up and confidently converted the penalty, blasting the ball past Fulham goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte to send Southampton into the quarterfinals.

‎Fulham manager, Marco Silva’s decision to heavily rotate his squad proved costly. Key players such as Raúl Jiménez, Antonee Robinson, and Alex Iwobi were left out of the starting lineup.

‎For Southampton, the victory continues an impressive revival under coach Tonda Eckert, who has transformed the team since taking over in November after Will Still departed.

‎After being relegated from the Premier League last season and initially struggling in the Championship, Southampton have climbed up the standings and are now pushing for a playoff spot.
