Fenerbahce Appoints Domenico Tedesco As Jose Mourinho’s Successor
Domenico Tedesco has been officially announced as the new head coach of Turkish Super Lig giants Fenerbahce, replacing Jose Mourinho in Istanbul.
Fenerbahce had been searching for a new manager after parting ways with Mourinho at the end of August, following their 1-0 aggregate defeat to Benfica in the Champions League play-off round.
The result cost the Turkish side a place in the final tournament.
“Domenico Tedesco has been appointed the head coach of our club’s professional football A team,” a statement from Fenerbahce read.
“The assistant to the manager will be Gokhan Gonlu, one of our previous captains, who wore our yellow and navy jersey for several years and has signed a two-year contract.
“Details regarding the signing ceremony of our new technical staff will be shared in due course.”
Tedesco had coached Belgium from February 2023 until he was sacked last January. He previously managed Schalke, Spartak Moscow, and RB Leipzig.
Hopes had been high when the 62-year-old arrived in Istanbul 14 months ago.
”No promises. But it is obvious that the main target, the main dream is to win the Turkish Super Lig,” the two-time Champions League-winning coach had said.
Jose Mourinho failed to fulfil his dream of ending Fenerbahce’s title drought dating back to 2014.
Last season, the former Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Roma coach guided Istanbul’s Yellow Canaries to second place, finishing behind Galatasaray.
