The host country Germany secured their place in the knockout stages with a convincing 2-0 victory over Hungary in Stuttgart.

The match started with a moment of worry for the German fans as Joshua Kimmich’s lapse in concentration almost allowed Hungary to take an early lead.

However, the alert Manuel Neuer came to the rescue, preventing a potential disaster. As the game progressed, Germany found their rhythm, with Robert Andrich and Ilkay Gundogan creating early chances that were prevented by the Hungarian defense.

Ilkay Gundogan was played in by Musiala and some good footwork gave it back to the Bayern Munich man who finished from ten yards out via the knee of Attila Fiola and the crossbar.

Despite Hungary’s protests of a foul in the build-up, VAR confirmed the goal, much to the delight of the home crowd.

Hungary, not willing to back down, showed resilience and threatened the German goal multiple times, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Barnabás Varga coming close to equalizing.

However, Neuer and the German defense stood firm, denying Hungary any clear-cut opportunities.

The second half saw Germany continue their dominance, with Peter Gulacsi making crucial saves to keep Hungary in the game.

Shortly after that, they were punished for their mistake when a well-executed German attack led to Maximilian Mittelstadt crossing from the left. Ilkay Gundogan then calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner from just outside the penalty area.
