Hamburg Police Fire Shots At Axe-wielding Person At Euro 2024 Fan Parade

According to a post on a social media platform X, German police opened fire on an individual who posed a threat to officers with a pickaxe and an incendiary device on the fringes of a Euro 2024 fan parade in downtown Hamburg on Sunday.

The post further mentioned that a significant police response is currently in progress, and the assailant is presently undergoing medical treatment for injuries.

The event took place in Hamburg’s St. Pauli district as Poland and the Netherlands prepared to face off at Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion at 2:00 pm.

Pre-game fan marches were planned, with a procession for Dutch fans taking place at 11:30 a.m., coinciding with the occurrence.

The month-long tournament, hosted by Germany, commenced on Friday evening.

According to the German newspaper Bild, the individual assaulted the police once they identified him.

Law enforcement initially deployed pepper spray and subsequently resorted to their firearms, firing warning shots before ultimately shooting the alleged attacker.

His condition is currently critical, and the motives behind the assault remain unknown.

Just an hour ago, it was reported on the Netherlands fans’ cheerful marches ahead of their match with Poland and it’s to be hoped that this incident can be quickly forgotten thanks to some swift action.

A security presence comprising of two hundred local police officers, supplemented by assistance from Dutch police, will maintain safety measures in Hamburg.
