Julian Nagelsmann has agreed to a contract extension with the German national team until the 2026 World Cup. The announcement comes amidst reported interest from Bayern Munich, with the former boss being touted as a potential candidate to take over the command at the Bundesliga giants following Thomas Tuchel’s impending departure this summer.

Nagelsmann, who took over as head coach of the German national team in September 2023 on a short-term deal, has enjoyed a positive start to his tenure. With three victories in his first six matches in charge, including impressive wins against powerhouses like France and the Netherlands, Nagelsmann has shown his tactical capability and ability to inspire his players to deliver on the international stage.

The 36-year-old expressed his joy and commitment to leading the national team, stating, “This is a decision of the heart. It is a great honor to be able to train the national team and work with the best players in the country. With successful, passionate performances, we have the chance to inspire an entire country.”

Nagelsmann’s coaching journey has been marked by success, with notable achievements such as guiding Hoffenheim to their first-ever UEFA Champions League qualification in 2017 and leading RB Leipzig to the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2020. His brief spell at Bayern Munich saw him clinch the Bundesliga title in his debut season before parting ways with the club in March.

German FA president Bernd Neuendorf expressed his satisfaction with Nagelsmann’s decision to extend his stay with the national team, highlighting the coach’s appeal to top clubs across Europe. “It is a strong signal for the DFB and the national team that Julian Nagelsmann will remain national coach beyond the home European Championships,” he said. “Because he is on the wish list of many big clubs across Europe. But for Julian Nagelsmann, the national team is more than just a job, it’s a real matter close to his heart.

He continued, “Now there is planning security and everyone can concentrate entirely on a successful performance at the European Championships.”
