La Liga Roundup: Barcelona Maintain Title Charge As Valverde Rescues Real Madrid

The La Liga title race continued to heat up over the weekend as FC Barcelona and Real Madrid both secured important victories, albeit in very different fashion.

‎While Barcelona relied on a moment of brilliance from teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, Real Madrid needed late drama and a touch of luck to edge past Celta Vigo.

Valverde’s Late Strike Saves Real Madrid

‎Real Madrid avoided a third consecutive league match without a win thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time goal from Federico Valverde in their 2-1 victory away at Celta Vigo.

‎Playing at the Estadio de Balaídos, Madrid initially took control of the match when Aurélien Tchouaméni opened the scoring early on.

‎However, the home side quickly responded as striker Borja Iglesias found the equalizer to keep Celta firmly in the contest.

‎As the match approached its conclusion, it looked like Madrid would once again drop valuable points in the title race. But deep into stoppage time, Valverde unleashed a powerful shot that took a decisive deflection off defender Marcos Alonso, wrong-footing the goalkeeper and finding the back of the net in the 95th minute.

‎The fortunate strike secured all three points for Carlo Ancelotti’s injury-hit side and kept them within touching distance of the league leaders.

Yamal Delivers Another Moment of Magic for Barcelona

‎If Madrid’s victory relied on fortune, Barcelona’s success came courtesy of pure talent.

‎At the intimidating San Mamés Stadium, Barcelona defeated Athletic Bilbao 1-0 thanks to a stunning goal from rising star Lamine Yamal.

‎The match was fiercely contested, with Athletic Bilbao launching wave after wave of attacks in front of their passionate home supporters.

‎Barcelona, however, remained resilient and relied on key saves from goalkeeper Joan García to keep the score level.

‎The breakthrough finally arrived in the 68th minute. Receiving a pass from Pedri, Yamal created space on the right side of the penalty area.

‎With remarkable composure for an 18-year-old, he took one touch to open up the angle before curling a superb left-footed shot that clipped the far post on its way into the net.

‎It was Yamal’s 19th goal in all competitions this season, further cementing his status as one of Europe’s brightest young talents.

‎The win kept Barcelona four points clear of second-placed Real Madrid as Hansi Flick’s side continues its push to retain the La Liga title.

Squad Rotation Ahead of Champions League Clash

‎Barcelona’s victory was even more impressive considering Flick opted to rotate several key players ahead of their upcoming UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash with Newcastle United.

‎Regular starters including Pedri, Raphinha, and Fermín López began the match on the bench and only entered during the final half hour.

‎Other changes saw Marcus Rashford, Marc Bernal, and Marc Casadó included in the starting lineup.

‎Meanwhile, Éric García and João Cancelo stepped in for injured full-backs Jules Koundé and Alejandro Balde.

‎The victory was also an important response following Barcelona’s recent defeat to Atlético Madrid in the Copa del Rey semifinals earlier in the week.

‎Villarreal Stay in the Champions League Hunt

‎Elsewhere, Villarreal CF kept pace in the race for a top-four finish after defeating Elche CF 2-1.

‎Goals in the first half from Tajon Buchanan and Santiago Mouriño gave Villarreal a comfortable lead before André Silva, formerly of AC Milan, pulled one back late for Elche.

‎The win kept Villarreal level on points with Atlético Madrid in third place, although the Madrid club maintains the advantage on goal difference.

‎Getafe Continue Their Strong Form

‎Another team enjoying a surge in form is Getafe CF, which followed up its surprise victory over Real Madrid with a convincing 2-0 win against Real Betis.

‎Veteran midfielder Kiko Femenía opened the scoring before Martín Satriano added a second goal. The Uruguayan forward, currently on loan from Olympique Lyonnais, has now scored in consecutive matches after his impressive strike against Real Madrid earlier in the week.

‎Sevilla Held Despite Akor Adams Goal

‎At the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium, Sevilla FC had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano.

‎Nigerian striker Akor Adams gave Sevilla an early lead, but Rayo Vallecano responded shortly after halftime through defender Alfonso Espino.

‎The result leaves both sides hovering in mid-table as they continue their push for consistency.
