Lecce Parts Ways With Manager Roberto D’Aversa
US Lecce has announced the dismissal of their manager, Roberto D’Aversa, after he was involved in a controversial incident during their recent match against Verona.
The 48-year-old coach was shown a red card for headbutting Verona striker Thomas Henry at the end of their 1-0 home defeat on Sunday.
The club wasted no time in releasing a statement condemning the incident & confirming the decision to part ways with D’Aversa. This move comes as a significant development in the Serie A season, with Lecce currently fighting to avoid relegation, sitting just one point above the relegation zone.
D’Aversa, who took over as Lecce’s manager in June 2023, expressed regret & offered an apology for his actions in a post-match interview. He clarified that while there was physical contact with Henry, it was not a deliberate headbutt as initially perceived. Despite his explanation, the club decided to terminate his contract in light of the unsportsmanlike conduct displayed.
In his statement following the incident, D’Aversa reportedly said, “I would like to apologize to everyone and_ at the same time reconstruct the sad and_ unpleasant episode that saw me as a negative protagonist at the end of Lecce-Verona.”
Lecce’s current position in the Serie A table reflects their struggle this season, with only five wins out of 28 league games.
The team’s recent performance, including one draw and_ four losses in their last five matches, has added to the challenges they face in securing their place in the top flight.
