Ligue 1 Roundup: Monaco Shock PSG As Title Race Heats Up
The Ligue 1 title race took a dramatic turn after AS Monaco handed defending champions Paris Saint-Germain their first home defeat of the season.
The 3–1 victory not only boosted Monaco’s hopes of climbing the table but alsoallowed rivals RC Lens to close the gap at the top.
With only nine rounds remaining, the fight for the title and European qualification places has become increasingly intense.
Monaco ends PSG’s Unbeaten Home Run
Monaco delivered an impressive performance to defeat PSG 3–1 away from home, ending the Paris club’s unbeaten record at the Parc des Princes this season.
The visitors took the lead in the 27th minute when Maghnes Akliouche capitalized on a poor clearance by Warren Zaïre-Emery inside the penalty area. With Folarin Balogun smartly stepping aside to create space, Akliouche fired a precise left-footed finish past the goalkeeper from close range.
Monaco doubled their advantage shortly after halftime through substitute Aleksandr Golovin, who made an immediate impact. The Russian midfielder swept home a square pass from Mamadou Coulibaly with his first touch after entering the match in the 55th minute.
PSG briefly threatened a comeback in the 71st minute when winger Bradley Barcola cut inside from the left wing and struck a right-footed effort into the net.
However, Monaco quickly restored their two-goal lead just two minutes later. Balogun’s shot took a slight deflection off Nuno Mendes, wrong-footing the goalkeeper and sealing a memorable victory for the visitors.
Despite the defeat, PSG remains four points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 standings.
Lens Capitalize to Tighten Title Race
Following PSG’s loss, RC Lens seized their opportunity by beating FC Metz 3–0, moving to within one point of the league leaders.
Lens entered the match in strong form after reaching the semifinals of the Coupe de France, where they eliminated Olympique Lyonnais in a penalty shootout after a 2–2 draw.
Against bottom-placed Metz, Lens initially struggled to break through, but the deadlock was finally broken just before halftime. Saudi Arabian defender Saud Abdulhamid unleashed a powerful half-volley following impressive play from striker Abdallah Sima.
Lens extended their lead shortly after the break when Abdulhamid combined with Adrien Thomasson to set up Florian Thauvin, who calmly finished from the edge of the penalty area.
Midfielder Amadou Haidara sealed the comfortable victory in the 52nd minute after a neat one-two with Matthieu Udol, giving Lens full control of the contest.
With just nine games remaining, the upcoming clash between Lens and PSG on April 11 could prove decisive in the title race.
Lyon continues to struggle
Meanwhile, Olympique Lyonnais’ difficult run of form continued after they were held to a 1–1 draw at home by Paris FC.
Lyon needed a stoppage-time penalty from captain Corentin Tolisso to salvage a point after Zimbabwe international Marshall Munetsi had given the visitors the lead in the 62nd minute.
The equalizer came after a handball decision was confirmed through VAR, allowing Tolisso to convert from the penalty spot.
The result leaves Lyon without a win in four matches, a worrying trend after their impressive 13-game winning streak across all competitions ended last month.
Rennes Continue Strong Form Under Haise
Elsewhere, Stade Rennais FC continued their impressive resurgence under coach Franck Haise with a commanding 4–0 victory away at OGC Nice.
It was Rennes’ third consecutive victory without conceding a goal since Haise took charge, further strengthening their push for European qualification.
Striker Esteban Lepaul opened the scoring with his 13th league goal of the season before midfielder Sebastian Szymanski doubled the lead midway through the first half.
Rennes then demonstrated their squad depth in the second half as substitutes Ludovic Blas and Nordi Mukiele added two more goals to complete a dominant performance.
The victory moved Rennes up to fifth place in the standings.
Late Drama for Lille and Lorient
LOSC Lille were forced to settle for a 1–1 draw against FC Lorient after a dramatic late equalizer.
Lille appeared to be heading toward victory despite the absence of injured striker Olivier Giroud, but Lorient midfielder Arthur Avom stunned the home crowd with a brilliant dipping strike from 25 meters in the third minute of stoppage time.
The result leaves Lille just behind Rennes in the race for European places.
Brest Secure Comfortable Home Victory
Elsewhere, Stade Brestois 29 claimed a solid 2–0 home win against Le Havre AC.
Winger Romain Del Castillo opened the scoring before striker Ludovic Ajorque sealed the victory with the second goal.
Thauvin Pushing for World Cup Recall
One of the standout performers in Ligue 1 recently has been Lens forward Florian Thauvin.
The 33-year-old has been in exceptional form, scoring in the league after playing a key role in Lens’ Coupe de France victory over Lyon earlier in the week. In that match, he scored once, assisted another goal, and converted the decisive penalty in the shootout.
After joining Lens from Udinese Calcio earlier this season, Thauvin has revived his career and forced his way back into the France national football team setup.
The former Olympique de Marseille star was part of France’s 2018 FIFA World Cup-winning squad and is now pushing for inclusion in coach Didier Deschamps’ squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.
